Trip of a lifetime

Empowering students through summer travel experiences

Pilar Herrera

Summer 2014

I am so honored to have been chosen for the opportunity to travel for two weeks. I truly believe this travel experience is a once in a lifetime experience. I found myself having a great time with people I normally wouldn’t talk to. I now I have developed great people skills and I am a lot more independent.

I was fortunate to go to Phoenix, Arizona for the first couple of days. It seemed really easy to make friends because everyone on the trip were so welcoming. Many knew each from home, but I was fortunate to go with another student from trip of a lifetime named Chelsey. It was really relaxing the first couple of days to just stay in the resort by the pool. The counselors surprised us with a baseball game with the Diamondbacks vs The Tigers. We had the opportunity to go to water park and I was really nervous, the encouragement from my roommates and companions really helped me through many of the rides. The following day I went to Sedona and there I went on a Pink Jeep tour. Basicly we were in a pink jeep and taking a tour around the red rock country. It was very beautiful setting and I really see myself coming back to the pink jeep tour. The next day we went to the Grand Canyon which was very spiritual and fascinating. To be able to say I went to the grand canyon is awesome. I loved Arizona and its western setting.

After Arizona we went to Utah and it was really quiet and hot. I really liked the hotel we stayed in and I really liked how different Utah is compared to the city. The first thing we did in Utah is wash our clothes. I was very surprised how so many of us didn’t know how to do laundry, but the counselors showed us which was actually really simple. The next day we went to Bryce Canyon and it was an intense hike. We had to go down the Canyon and walk up wards to another trail. It was very beautiful and I found myself taking so many pictures. That day in the Canyon, me and some of the people from the group got lost and we had no idea where we were going. I’m really glad this happened because for the rest of the trip we all got really close because we all relied on each other to get to a counselor. We worked really well as a group and eventually found a counselor. The next day we went to a animal sanctuary and it was nice to look at all the different type of birds. After that we went to Zion Canyon and it was really busy with a lot of hikers, but other than that it was wonderful. Going to Utah was a new experience and one of my favorite parts was getting lost in Bryce Canyon because I made lifelong friends.

The next place I went to was Las Vegas, Nevada which really reminded me of Time Square. I really loved going to the stores and sightseeing. For instance, I visited Caesars Palace and going on the Las Vegas High Roller Wheel. Afterwards, We went the NY NY roller coaster and it was so nerve racking that I started to panic, but my friends consoled me and I got on the ride and i'm so happy I did. Even Though I spent a short amount time in Las Vegas I am so glad that I had the opportunity to do all these different things and make memories with friends.

My final destination was California and I was really excited for the chance to explore. The first place we went to was the San Diego Zoo. Witnessing so many animals was truly a great experience. The zoo was amazing because I got on these carts that take you up high to view the entire zoo. The following day we went to the beach and we had the option to go surfing. I chose wrong and did not surf because I got really scared and worried that i would drown. My advice is to always push yourself and to never second guess yourself. If I had a second chance I would have surfed, but now I have to live with my decision and I definitely will push myself from now on. The next day I was lucky enough to try a burger place called IN and OUT and really liked it. After that I went to Disney Land and the kid in me was so excited. It truly is the happiest place on earth. I loved the fireworks and all the rides I got on, even though I was yelling like a maniac on all the baby rides. The following day I had to go to beverly hills on rodeo drive and looking at all the fancy stores really inspired me that one day I will be able to make it wherever I go. After leaving Beverly Hills, I had the chance to go to Venice beach and it reminded me of coney island and to never forget where i come from. I really loved the beauty venice beach had, it really inspired me and meeting the people there were great. For the evening I went to a comedy club and it was my first time ever, I couldn’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. The next day I went to Universal Studios Hollywood, and it was a bittersweet moment because after universal we all had to go home. I really liked universal and it was fun because I got to ride on all these scary rides with people I who have been with me since day one. I can’t wait to reunite with everyone from the trip.

Having this opportunity to network with others is a skill I feel I improved in. I would like other students to have the opportunity to travel because it really motivates you and disciplines you in a positive way. I’m glad to say that trip of a lifetime helped me accomplish my goal. This trip was a real eye opener and I really see myself traveling in the future. I hope to stay in contact with trip of a lifetime and I hope to have other opportunities like trip of a lifetime.
