Trip of a lifetime

Empowering students through summer travel experiences

Summer 2011

At first when I got accepted into trip of a lifetime I was very nervous yet curious because I have very little experience on traveling and the world itself. Inside my head I kept wondering about the people I was going to meet and the places I would see. I also kept thinking about how I was going to feel those two weeks away from home not knowing anyone going on the trip. Just before I left I decided that I was going to have fun, learn new things and not be scared of the unfamiliar.

Once I arrived at the airport I was very intimidated by the other kids, everybody see so much older then me and I was not sure if I was going to fit in. however, once the director of the teen tour introduced me to the kids and we stared talking. Apparently the kids weren’t as different from me most of because were freshman going on sophomore year.  Everybody was so nice and there were a lot of kids they were social and not shy at all which helped a lot because I can be shy at time. We were all on a plane for six hours but it was a good experience because that way we got to know each other better before we landed in San Francisco.

When we landed in San Francisco we were all tired and extremely hungry. Luckily the first thing we did was check into the hotel and freshened up before dinner. I really liked the hotel everything was well organized and it was my first time actually staying in a hotel.   That night we had dinner at the hard rock café located on Pier 39 and it was nice being to eat something after a long plane ride. After dinner we were taken to a teen club which was awkward because no one knew each other that well and we were all very tired. On the positive side we saw the counselors’ dance which was very funny. The next day we were very busy in San Francisco we had breakfast in a very small but cute little town and tried to ride cable cars but it was not possible.  That same day we went to china town which was amazing because the food was so good.  After china town we went took a tour of Alcatraz. I was really into Alcatraz it was exciting and just the fact that I was seeing the place where horrible criminals were once kept made the tour trilling. After Alcatraz we went for ice cream to make up for the fact that we could not ride the cable cars. . The next day was also very busy since we went and walked the golden gate bridge, went to a small town for and went to see a baseball game the New York Mets vs. the San Francisco Giants.

After three nights in San Francisco we went to Laketahoe which was nothing like San Francisco. Laketahoe was very relaxing and very country like. We only spent two nights in Laketahoe but I enjoyed them a lot. While in Laketahoe I was able to try tubing which ended up being extremely pleasurable. At first I did not know what tubing was because I never heard of it but I decided to try it and I am so glad I did since I am never going to forget that feeling of happiness I felt. After a day of relaxing at the lake everybody went to their condos were we cooked dinner our self. Dinner was really fun that day since me and my roommates screwed up the dinner because it was not very tasteful however we had a good laugh that day laughing at our silly mistakes.

After two nights in Laketahoe we went to Monterey a really small town but with a nice view of the Pacific Ocean. While in Monterey we were able to go to the aquarium and bowling since the last time I went bowling or the aquarium was when I was nine. I enjoyed the aquarium where I got to see jellyfish, penguins, seahorses and flamingos. I also really enjoyed bowling because even though I was not very good at it I did knock a few pins down and had a wonderful time.

Once we spent two nights in Monterey we were on our way to Los Angeles which was an eight hour drive but totally worth it. I absolutely felt in love with Los Angeles it was a very glamorous place very city like but with a tropical twist to it because of the beaches, trees and the pleasant weather. We stayed at the Hyatt in Los Angeles which was a stunning hotel everything looked perfect and it was so comfortable. While in Los Angeles we where able to benefit from activities such as going to the beach, watching a comedy show, visit Disneyland  and walk around and do some shopping. Out of all the activities we were able to do I enjoyed the beach and Disneyland the most. At the beach we went surfing and even though I was only able to stand for two seconds on my board it was my fist time surfing and I can say the experience is quit unforgettable. Disneyland was also very nice even though I did not get on many rides and did a lot of walking around it was very fun and a nice experience.

We only spent two nights in Los Angeles because after we had to go on our three day cruise to Mexico however, we did go back to Los Angeles for one more day before we had to go home. The cruise was very exciting and there were cool activities like going to the hot tub or water slide, going to see comedy shows and enjoying the really good food at the cruise. When we arrived in Mexico it was very hot but it was different since Mexico is a very desert like place but very beautiful.  After the three day cruise and enjoying a couple of hours in Mexico we were back to Los Angeles where we went to universal studios and afterwards spent our last night together.

I really enjoyed my experience in California where I did many things for the first time I am so glad that trip of lifetime gave me this chance to explore ands learn a little more about this world I am so thankful that they are not enough words to describe my gratitude.
