TRIP OF A LIFETIME ESSAY

When I got the paper from my teachers saying that I was suggested for a trip of a lifetime a lot of thoughts went through my mind. Will I get in? Will my application be accepted? Will I be good enough? So I was extremely shocked when I was told that not only was my application excepted but they also wanted an interview. I was extremely shy and I was afraid that I would mess up on my
interview but after talking with them I felt more at ease. My aunt reassured me that if I didn’t get it this
year I still got this far. I was in the midst of my end of the year school trip when I got the news and I
couldn’t wait to go on the trip.

Before I went on the trip I was invited to the first annual trip of a lifetime meet and greet . In the meet and greet my insecurities were put to rest after hearing all the other kids stories and experiences. I also happened to be sitting next to someone going on the same trip as me.  Even though I still felt unsure about my shyness getting in the way I felt better listening to other kids stories.

When my aunt and I got to the airport I felt as if I was the only one my race or ethnicity at first until more people came in. after getting my boarding pass and going through security I made a new friend with someone who looked as shy as I felt. After we struck up conversation my shyness quickly dimmed and I thought “This won’t be so bad after all.”

The fun truly began when we landed at Myrtle Beach. I began to make friends that I could keep forever. This was memorable because I met a lot of people who thought I was hilarious and very social and started off a great trip experience.

I came back home with new friends, a lot of souvenirs, and a new concept of who I am.  After meeting kids from all different walks of life I learned that my experiences can help broaden people’s mind and that their experience helped broaden mine even though it was fun.

I really wanted to thank all of the TOAL staff for allowing me to go on this trip that helped me get over my shyness. This trip encouraged me in many ways to strive for what I want to do.  It helped build my confidence in many ways. Even though I may live in a slightly bad part of my neighborhood I can say I'm no longer shy and to reach my goals it takes one step at a time.
