Trip of a lifetime

Empowering students through summer travel experiences

Summer 2011

I was placed in the California Cruising teen tour trip. This teen tour was an unforgettable experience because throughout my journey I learned so much about myself, others, and of a new lifestyle. My teen tour taught us many things, but it taught me to always have confidence in yourself, learn how to help others, and learn how to take care of your community.

The second day of the trip, our counselors told us to get into groups of four or more and always stay together. In these groups we had the opportunity to play games, walk around, and eat lunch. Being in these groups taught us responsibility.  Each time we got into a group we looked out for each other as if we were brothers and sisters. Therefore, responsibility was a major role played during this trip.

When I got home from the teen tour my mother asked me what my favorite part was. I honestly didn’t know what to respond because every day in our teen tour turned out to be my favorite part. However, if I had to choose my favorite place it would be Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe was my favorite because it was when we all became closer together as if we were a big family. We stayed at condo –houses. Each condo had six kids. When we first got to Lake Tahoe we left our things at our assigned condo and met on our meeting place. We walked to a nearby grocery shop and were given about 90 dollars per condo to buy groceries. This meant we had to cook our own breakfast, lunch, and dinner, for two nights; we were all anxious and a little nervous because we didn’t have any cooking experience. My condo cooked macaroni and cheese, salad, fruit bowl, and tacos. I felt that even though we didn’t have any cooking experience, we did an awesome job.

Alcatraz was the most interesting experience because we learned a lot. Alcatraz Island was first used as a prison in the 1850's. Its first inmates were military prisoners. The US Army used Alcatraz until 1933 when the federal government opened a maximum security prison there. The prison closed in 1963 because the institution was too expensive to continue operating. An estimated amount of $3-5 million was needed just for restoration and maintenance work to keep the prison open… I learned so much about Alcatraz that I could go on forever. Alcatraz was one of the most unforgettable places we visited.

Whitewater Rafting is for sure one experience that I and no one will never forget. This experience taught us group work because we all had to paddle at the same time and listen to each other. The speed current of the water was incredibly fast and the water was freezing! Because I was sitting on the front of the raft, I was splashed the most. We all kept our fingers crossed so we wouldn’t fall into the river. At first we were scared but then we relaxed and had an amazing time rafting.

This teen tour has been an unforgettable adventure; it feels like it’s a dream come true because we went to so many awesome places  that I had never imagined visiting. Also, the way we learned how to work with others has inspired me to help others. I would love to help my school fun raise money so they can have a trip of a lifetime, like i did! I will spread the word and inform others of how they should help their community to encourage each other to travel around the world and learn about their surroundings.

I thank the organization of Trip of a Lifetime because this trip taught me many important things like always having confidence in yourself, learning how to help others, and learning how to take care of your community. Thank you for the unforgettable experience.
